BACKGROUND OF THE TEST:  Alkalinity is a measure of ability of water to neutralize any acid. Alkalinity in water is observed primarily due to bicarbonate, carbonate and hydroxide ions in water. Alkalinity test represents water potential towards scaling and corrosion sides. Water treatment engineers use alkalinity test results to interpret different indices like LSI, RI, and PSI as well for boiler water chemistry interpretation.

Nuclotrasis offers user friendly test method with ease of handling the relevant reagents and other equipments used in the analysis. For determination of alkalinity in industrial water, this test relies on volumetric titration between sample alkalinity builder analytes in sample as titrand and standard acid as titrant while the required reagents are used through easy handling glassware.

REAGENTS/EQUIPMENTS/APPARATUS:  • Provided 5 mL & 10 mL marked glass vial (Item Code: 02-01) • NUCLOTRASIS p-Alkalinity Test Indicator  (Item code: 01-06-01) • NUCLOTRASIS M-Alkalinity Test Indicator (Item code: 01-06-02) •     NUCLOTRASIS Alkalinity Test Titrant Solution        (Item code: 01-06-03)

SAMPLE COLLECTION & PREPARATION • Make sure to immediately analyze the sample after collection of sample. • Ensure to collect sample in a suitable and designated bottle for a specific sample. •     Ensure to conduct this test at room temperatures.

TEST PROCEDURE:  1. We recommend selecting the sample volume in   the provided glass vial (Item code: 02-01) based on your expected/desired range from the chart below.

p-ALKALINITY DETERMINATION 2. Add 2-3 drops of NUCLOTRASIS p-Alkalinity Test Indicator (Item Code: 01-06-1) and gently mix. Pink color will appear if palkalinity is present in the sample. 3. If p-alkalinity is present, titrate the sample drop wise while counting number of drops of NUCLOTRASIS Alkalinity Test Titrant Solution (Item Code: 01-06-3) with gentle mixing until colorless solution is obtained. 4. Note the number of drops added and multiply with multiplication factor mentioned in above chart against selected sample volume.  5. Report p-alkalinity result as ppm of CaCO3.

M-ALKALINITY DETERMINATION 1. Add 2-3 drops of NUCLOTRASIS M-Alkalinity Test Indicator (Item Code: 01-06-2) and gently mix. Blue color will appear. 2. Now titrate the sample drop wise while counting number of drops of NUCLOTRASIS Alkalinity Test Titrant Solution (Item Code: 01-06-3) with gentle mixing until Peach solution is obtained. 3. Note the number of drops added and multiply with multiplication factor mentioned in above chart against selected sample volume.  4. Report M-alkalinity result as ppm of CaCO3.

OH-ALKALINITY DETERMINATION 1. To obtain OH-Alkalinity, use following formula:           OH-Alkalinity = 2P-M

Where,

P = p-alkalinity obtained M = M-Alkalinity obtained 2. Report OH-alkalinity result as ppm of CaCO3.
